Barcode Readers/Scanners - 1D(Linear) / 2D (Matrix) / Imager / Laser

Reading a barcode is probably the most common feature of a rugged mobile device used in business from stock control to location verification the uses of barcodes are as varied as the technology used to read them.

A laser barcode scanner user a laser which is a tightly focused beam of light to read the barcode. The imager takes an image of the target area and then interperates the image returned. This can mean that the imager is sometimes slower than the laser.

When choosing your barcode reader you need to decide which type of barcode you will be reading 1D or 2D.

Below are an example of a 1D (linear) barcode and a 2D (Matrix) barcode. The 1D is sometimes called linear because they are composed of single lines. The 2D is sometimes called a matrix because the barcode spreads out in two directions creating a square or matrix.

RS232 Serial Port For Tinytag Dataloggers

The RS232 port is widely used to connect to and dowload from all types of dataloggers. These are devices left in the field to record data usually over a set period of time. The mobile device is then connected to download the data while the device stays in place.

There are a variety of mobile devices available with an RS232 serial port. The Juniper System Archer and the Intermec CN3 with snap-on RS232 adaptor are among the best. The archer is available with bluetooth but if you need Wireless or GPRS then have a look at the CN3:
